The first invention I learned about this week was the clothes hanger. O.A. North invented the clothes hanger in 1869. The clothes hanger allows you to hang up your clothes in a small area. It also allows you to neatly fit your clothes in closets. In New York the clothes hanger was very popular in apartments. The modern wire hanger was invented in 1903. From this genius invention it led to the walk in closet.
The second invention I learned about this week was the rotary can opener. William Lyman invented the rotary can opener with his skills with metal working in 1870. The rotary can opener makes opening cans easier then before. It’s a quick easy why to open cans. From this genius invention can goods became more important then ever. It changed the diet of Americans and created industry’s like orange juice.
The third invention I learned about this week was the mail order catalog. Aaron Montgomery Ward invented the mail order catalog to provide a wide selection of goods. It provides a wide variety of items. It had a risk free guarantee. The catalog had cheap prices. From the mail order catalog, it lead to retailers like Walmart and Amazon.
The fourth invention I learned about this week was earmuffs. Chester Greenwood invented the earmuffs at the age of 15 after his ears got cold from ice skating. Ear muffs allow you to keep your ears warm in cold and windy weather. It also allows you to work in loud places with out damaging your ears. Greenwood set up a factory and stared to make his earmuffs in 1877. Today they are used in construction sites.
The most interesting thing I learned about this week was that a house was 500 to 1,000 dollars. The reason I found this cool was because a house now costs 410,000 dollars. The reason I liked this fact was because I would have a enough money to buy a house back then.
