History lesson 125

The first invention I learned about this week was the light bulb. Thomas Edison overcame the problem of low electrical resistance and invented the commercially viable light bulb in 1879. Incandescent lights are cheap. The light gives off abundant light. This light can be easily installed and saves labor cost. The filaments used in the bulb was upgrade to be more durable. Edison expanded his dc power grid to help accommodate the power needed by bulbs.

The second invention I learned about this week was the cash register. James Ritty invented the cash register to prevent his cashiers from stealing from his saloon. The cash register makes it harder to steal because sales are tracked.. The new machine writes down all purchases. NCR dominated the industry with it’s innovative and well design marketing program.

The third invention I learned about this week was the thermostat. Throughout the middle ages, science was rapidly advancing. This led to the advance in inventions, throughout the rest of time. This inspired many inventions throughout the 1800’s. Warren Johnson seized the opportunity and created the bi-metallic thermostat in 1883. This great new invention called the thermostat is able to determine temperature. Warren Johnson in 1880 had worked with temperature and created the incubator.

The fourth invention I learned about this week was the steam turbine. Charles Parsons invented the steam turbine in 1884. The turbine efficiently converts heat into rotational motion to cheaply convert heat into electricity. This turbine is 95% of our electricity to this day.

The most interesting thing I learned about this week was the steam turbine. The reason I found this interesting was because we use a invention from 1884 and it still makes up 95% of our electricity. I thought this was a very interesting fact.
