History lesson 170

The first invention I learned about this week was the TCP/IP internet protocol suite. Khan and Cerf developed the TCP/IP protocol suite to extend the concept and allow computers to talk to other types of hardware, like satellites. TCP/IP is the set of rules that govern how data will be formatted and transmitted over the internet. Software and computers companies began developing TCP/IP add-ones for there PC operating systems. The protocols made the world wide web possible, which unlocked vast amount of knowledge.

The second invention I learned about this week was the graphical user interface. Computer interfaces evolved from plugging cables and flipping switches to command line interface. The graphical user interface was invented Xerox’s PARC in 1973. It presents a friendly, easy to understand graphical way for people to use and interact with computers. The GUI unlocked computing allowing it to become mainstream. It allowed things such as the internet and touch screen phones.

The first person I learned about this week was Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs was born in 1955 and was adopted, then he co- founded Apple Computers in 1976 in his garage. His accomplishments were lager than life and had a disproportionate impact on computing. Because of Steve Jobs we have GUI’s, Pixar the movie franchises, and smart phones.

The second person I learned about this week was Bill Gates. Bill Gates got into programming as a teenager, dropped out of Harvard and developed BASIC for Altair. He co-founded Microsoft in 1976 which developed windows. Gates kept Microsoft going then hired his friend Steve Ballmer, Steve then took over as CEO.

I think Steve Ballmer advertisement was effective. He advertised it as it was expensive but with a lot of features, so it was well worth the money. But at the end he tells you its only 100$ which makes you think I need that.
