Science 6 lesson 7

Think of a building in your neighborhood, town or city that is made of rock or stone. Determine the type of rock. Write a short paper on your discoveries, including: rock type, rock name, color, texture and minerals. Also include which rock you would use for a house.

One of the buildings in my town is a old blacksmith. Which I find interesting for many reasons. I was never able to figure out what the walls were made out of but know, I finally can. The building is little metamorphic rock and a lot of it a sedimentary rocks. The two types of rocks used are limestone and a little bit of slate. The outside and inside are both grey to a little light blue. The building is smooth in most places. The most amount of minerals are calcite and dolomite, but also there is a little mica, chlorite, and not a lot of quartz.

If I was going to build a house, I would use granite. For many reasons such as it is can hold up against rain, snow, hot, cold, and much more. Granite is heavy won’t move, plus granite looks good.
