Write a 300 word rock report on your rock. Include the rock type, how it formed, and what it’s made of.
The rock I found is very interesting for many reasons. I found it when day when walking around my town. I looked it up and it was a amethyst. I found one big chunk of one and small one. It is purple with a hint of white mixed in. The amethyst is a Metamorphic rock but very rarely a sedimentary rock. Amethyst crystals are formed inside pyrogenic volcanic rocks referred to as basalts. These are the direct result of volcanic lava. These rocks then become the very vessels for creating the formation of amethyst by way of minerals and water combining over time. Amethyst is a purple variety of quartz. It owes its violet color to irradiation, impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals, and the presence of other trace elements, which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions.
The amethysts are found in the United States. Arizona, Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maine and Colorado are some of the most common places to find amethysts. The largest amethyst mine is in North America which is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. A interesting fact is amethyst is a birth stone. The birth stone is for February. Amethysts are one of my favorite minerals

That is my rocky report for amethysts. Can’t wait to learn more about geology this year.
