History lesson 85

Summarize the lives of at least three of the important Greeks studied this week.

Greece has a history of many great contributors to the academics of philosophy, science, and math that are highly regarded even today. In this essay, we’re going to summarize the lives of a philosopher, scientist, and mathematician from ancient Greece. Though they have many things in common their achievements are diverse. Three people who I will be discussing are Socrates the philosopher, Archimedes the scientist, and Hypatia the mathematician.

The first person who I am going to talk about is Socrates. He grew up during the golden age of Pericles’ Athens. He was a stonecutter, and served in the military before he became a philosopher. Socrates was also put on a trial for perverting the minds of the youth and for disrespecting the gods, and he was unfortunately sentenced to death by poison.

The 2nd important person is Hypatia. She was the earliest female mathematician who had life and work reasonably detailed the knowledge that existed up to that point. She was born around 350 A.D. in Alexandria, Egypt and had much more freedom than most women because of her highly respected father. Most women didn’t get to study math or science or engage in politics. However, Hypatia was one of the first woman of her time to study and teach math, astronomy, and philosophy.

Finally, is Archimedes who is possibly one of the world’s greatest scientist of the Classical Age. He was a physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, and engineer. A lot of his inventions, theories, and concepts are still being used today. Archimedes is the most recognized for his discovery of the relation between the surface and volume of a sphere and its circumscribing cylinder.

As you can see, all three of these ancient Greek people are very important and very smart innovators of their time as well as by today’s standards. That is my essay on week 17.
