Week 26 lesson 130

Julius Caesar

This is what I learned about Julius Caesar. In 70 BC, Pompey and Crassus, two successful generals, demanded to be consuls to restore some order to the city. It was because after the Punic wars the consul had some conflicts. There was a guy named Sulla and he became dictator that will be important later. Now, Pompey and Crassus reversed Sulla’s legislation and returned power to the tribunes which had been stolen. In 60 BC, Pompey and Crassus made an alliance with Julius Caesar, another great general. This was known as the first triumvirate. It was not very long after it was formed, that Julius Caesar wanted to be the ultimate ruler. He arranged for Crassus to retire and for Pompey to be killed in war. Julius Caesar was then the last remaining ruler, so he ruled as dictator for a time. Julius Caesar made some important reforms such as: relieving hardships and debt of citizens, made North Africa, France, and Spain into Roman colonies, he replaced the Roman calendar with the Julian calendar, he began public building projects, and gave citizenship to many of his supporters. Julius Caesar was assassinated by senators for trying to claim to much power. That is what learned about Julius Caesar this week. I hope you liked this essay.
