History lesson 35

Vikings

The Vikings were a Germanic people. They were good at heart people. Most of people think that the Vikings were always barbaric . That is a big misconception. They have might lived barbaric during battle’s, but they were known for being clean and organized at home.

Another some what big misconception is that Vikings wore helmets with horns on them. They did not actually wear helmets with horns, not at least during battle they didn’t.  They were usually blue-eyed and red or blond-haired people.

The Vikings mostly used two different types of ships. The Longship and the Knarr ship. The Longship is a voyage ship. Then the Knarrs is a merchant ship for selling. The difference is that the Knarrs was more profound, more comprehensive, and shorter than the Longships.

Rune stones were also made by the Vikings. Initially, they inscribed the runestone’s purpose on it. Usually, this was done to honor the deceased, demarcate land, or remember a significant occasion. After that, they etched the name of the person who raised the stone and, if it was for the dead, the deceased’s relationship with the raiser.

England 787 was when the first Viking attack happened. Viking ships pulled into an England port. When an agent of a king tried to tax them, he thought they were merchant ships. He was killed, and that ended the first Viking attack.

One of the suggested reasons that the Vikings started to expand is because they became Christian. After becoming Christian, the Vikings learned to cease their raiding and battle life and instead took to finding new colonies instead. The word Viking actually translates to seamen and expeditions.

793-1066 AD where the dates of the Viking golden age. The Viking age ended in 1066 because of the defeat of the Vikings at the Battle of Stamford. The Vikings made a significant impact on our daily life. The names of Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday come from the Norse Gods’ names Odin Thor and Freya. I hope you liked my essay.
