The Forming of the Holy Roman Empire
When Pope John XII ran into difficulties and needed help from the ruler, the Holy Roman Empire was established. Otto the First was the title given to the ruler at the time. I will be writing about Otto the First and how he founded the Holy Roman Empire in this essay.
Otto was born in 912 in Saxony and became the Duke of Saxony and Germany in 936. While he was the Duke, he quickly united all of the Vassals. A noble who owed money to the king was called a Vassal. He did this because his father had brought them apart.
Otto was a very greedy emperor, and wanted all the attention. So in 951 there was news of the Queen of Italy being in trouble. So Otto wanting the credit, he went to help her. The Queen, whose name was Adalaide, was very grateful and got married to Otto later on.
A few years later, the Magyars invaded them. Otto lost his first son, but he managed to win the war. Adelaide was Otto’s second son and the heir to the throne after his first son died.
Then, in around 962, Pope John XII was in trouble and needed help. Otto said he would help if the Pope made him king over Germany, since he was only a duke. Otto the first became the first ever Holy Roman Emperor. He was the first Emperor because the Pope made him king. The Holy Roman Empire lasted until the time of Napoleon, who was not one of the Holy Roman Emperors because he crowned himself king. The strange thing about the Holy Roman Empire was that it wasn’t holy, Roman, and or an Empire. I hope you liked my essay.
