A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court: Setting
In the book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Hank Morgan, the main character is transported back in time to the sixth century. Hank Morgan was frequently referred to as a modern man in England during the 1800s. Hank is struck so severely in the head by a crowbar blow from a employee that he is sent back in time to the sixth century and falsely accused of a crime he didn’t commit.
Sixteenth-century Camelot is obviously very different from nineteenth-century Camelot, where everything is more up to date. The city of Camelot is in older England. This city was ruled by King Arthur. The rich and the poor were sharply divided in Camelot, a land of fortified castles and knights in gleaming armor. Royals and other wealthy people had the best homes and were frequently referred to as elegant. The lives of the common people were frequently much harder than those of the wealthy and more powerful. The common people had to work hard just to survive.
Hank Morgan is held captive in a castle upon his arrival in Camelot, where he awaits his execution. But he knows there is going to be a solar eclipse, and if they do not release him, he said I will make the sky dark forever. When the eclipse occurs on the day he was supposed to be executed, he is freed and goes on to play a significant role in King Arthur’s court.
Following his time in Camelot, Hank earns the nickname “The Boss,” drawing admirers from all over the world to witness his amazing feats. But as Hank grows to there accustomed lifestyle in England, he begins to invent things that were peculiar to his time. The way things operate in Camelot changes significantly as a result, for instance knights are now seen riding bicycles into battle rather than horses. Hank also makes the decision to begin instructing the common people, a move that at the time was not thought to be beneficial by the wealthy. In order to simplify communication with other locations, Hank installs phones in their castles. Because they were able to learn about the enemy ahead of time, Camelot is able to win the battle. Hank was able to cause for the new Camelot and old Camelot to become a great Juxtapostian.
In the book they eventualy sent Hank back to his verson of Camelot but it is different then he remembers. Because of him making modern inventions back then now his world is more different then ever.
To conclude the book A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court was a book in which the setting was a key factor in the story. Other times, the setting helped make the book a more tense or more serious. This is why the setting of a story is so important, because it helps define the mood and customs of the time and place where the story happens. I loved reading this book and seeing what happens. I hope you liked my essay. Thank you for reading.
