Write 500 words on this topic: “Discuss some of the good things that came as a result of his heart attack.”
Jim Lehrer was one of the most well-known reporters and newscasters, who shaped the way of news. However, what many people may not know is the fact that he had a heart attack. This heart attack completely changed his life and the way he viewed things and lived.
In his autobiography Jim shows that he overhauled his diet by completely cutting out all of his unhealthy habits. In the book he describes everything he used to eat in tremendous detail. He said he “had the eating habit of a pimply-faced 15-year-old.” He then said he would eat pizza, fries, candy, chips, Cheez Whiz, corn dogs, chili dogs, pancakes, waffles, and many more things. Although he fixed his diet, there was still more he was going to fix.
Another thing he did after the heart attack was quit smoking. Jim said that he lost the urge to smoke. This is a very good thing because he lived a little healthier and beat an urge that is very tough for a lot of people. Then the book talks about his times in the workout room, where he would find company with other people recovering. This is where he could discuss problems he had and really work through them.
One of the final things he did was travel back to his old town and start collecting bus signs again. After the heart attack, he traveled to his hometown again. He looked at the old bus depot and traveled back to the pinball incident. He then started to collect and negotiate for old bus signs again. This used to be one of his old hobbies, but it started to die off as time went on. But after the heart attack, he realized that life is too short and started to collect again.
To summarize, without his heart attack, his life could have gotten a lot worse. He could have eaten worse, smoked more, and probably had a few heart attacks and died. This heart attack did truly change his life and mind, and without it, he wouldn’t have beaten the addiction of smoking, he wouldn’t have eaten any healthier, and he certainly wouldn’t have changed his career choices. This heart attack reshaped him completely, going from a stressed workaholic to an easier-going man. I would like to say thank you for reading my essay.
