English lesson 20 Autobiographies

Write 500 words on this topic: “What is the story that I remember the best? Describe it from memory. What was it that grabbed me? What did he do that made it grab me?”

There are a lot of interesting stories in Jim Lehrer’s book A Bus of My Own. The stories are very significant because they contain life lessons that are difficult to obtain now in many other books. And some of these stories stick better than others, having connections to someone else’s life. But one story that sticks out to me is when his father owned their own bus company and their bus lost it’s brakes. This story, in my opinion, is among the most significant in the book since it demonstrates courage and determination by Jim and his driver.

The most important story is when Jim and his driver lose their brakes on their bus full of passengers.  Why this story is crucial is because Jim and the driver pretended nothing was wrong since they did not want to scare the passengers. Instead, the driver drove with tremendous courage, delivering all the passengers at the stop. Not only was this dangerous for Jim and the driver, but they could have hurt a lot of people. Jim could have not only hurt people but also financially hurt the company. If it wasn’t for the driver, there could have been a much worse outcome. Instead, what the driver did was he used the gears to downshift and slow the bus when needed. There were several times when they almost did get in an accident because the bus couldn’t stop.

Why this story is tremendously important is because of the danger aspect. The story shows that one man is brave enough to keep driving a bus with no brakes just to keep his passengers safe. However, at times he does bring them into danger. Like when the driver drove through the intersections and couldn’t stop. But overall, in the end, he was able to get the passengers to where they were going. Some of the passengers were very grateful because of what he did, and others were very upset once they found out.

The book A Bus Of My Own is a very well-written book with some very great stories; all the stories have their place, but this one stood out to me the most. With that said, I would like to take the time and say thank you for reading my essay.
