Write 250 words on this topic: “Should the group in a legislator’s district that got him elected monitor his votes, and recruit someone to run against him in the next primary if he starts voting wrong?”
This is a question that I never thought that I would be writing about, but after thinking for awhile, I do have an answer. This week we started reading “What makes you think we read the bills” by Bill Richardson. After reading a few chapters of this book I thought yes you should be able to recruit someone to run against a legislator who votes wrong.
A legislator is an elected official who represents a district of people and writes, debates, and passes laws within a legislative branch. If the legislator is elected by the district of people to enact laws based on what he said and the legislator does not or fails to, then the group of people should have the right to recruit someone else to run against him. If a legislator breaks the promises he makes, votes against the interest of the voters, or breaks campaign promises, the voters have the right to seek out a new official to be in office.
In a constitutional republic the voters have the right to remove representatives who don’t act in their interest aka not what they voted for. The power rests with the voters rather than the politicians; the people elect their representatives and also have the authority to remove them through voting. Without accountability from voters the government would ignore the needs of the citizens they represent.
Basically, if a legislator does not represent the people that elected him, people should have the ability to choose someone else in their next election. This keeps legislators and other officials accountable and make sure that they are working for the people and not themselves.
