History lesson 70

Greek Olympics

Today I chose to write about the Greeks Olympics. I studied about the Greeks culture, and I found this part very interesting. So here is some stuff I learned about it. The Greeks did this as a celebration of the God Zeus. They also did it show how man really was strong. The Greeks first event was nothing but a foot race. For a couple of years this was what they did on a 640 foot track of clay and sand. Then, after a few times they decided extended it to other sports. There was boxing, wrestling, javelin, discus throwing, the foot race, chariot racing, horse racing, and Pentathlon. It was 5 separate sports molded into one. Which I think is pretty cool.

The people that would won these competitions were rewarded very heavily. They would get invited to the fanciest, most prestigious parties. They did not have to pay taxes for life, and was well known throughout his or her town. Of course, this amped up the competition and people started becoming very vicious and violent in a couple of the events. All that really did was just make it more delightful for the crowd with the vigorous behavior. The Olympics soon came to an end in the 4th century A.D. It happened when Emperor Theodosius put an halt to it. This was around the time that Christianity was the main belief, after all the Greeks did this mainly to honor their lords. So it had stopped for centuries until they were revived. A French baron named Pierre de Coubertine brought back the Olympics. It was 1896 when this happened, and even today we still have them. Of course today we have the Olympics with a ton more events and larger arenas. But we have to give credit to the Greeks, because if it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be looking forward to this worldwide phenomenon every four years. That was my week 14 essay.
